Why do I have to submit my most recent passport if it has expired?

Passport Canada requires your most recent passport, valid or expired, in order to process a renewal application in the absence of an applicant's documentary evidence of citizenship, supplementary identification and guarantor declaration.

Please note that to be eligible for the Simplified Renewal Application Process, your most recent passport must have been issued within the last SIX (6) years, and if you applied for your last passport from the United States, it must have been issued in Canada.
